Am I Having an Emergency?

Common Dental Emergencies

The category of dental emergency includes more conditions than you might think. Oral injuries, such as cracked teeth, loose or avulsed (knocked-out) teeth and oral lacerations to the tongue, lips and cheeks are obvious emergencies. However, many other oral health issues may also require emergency treatment. This includes pulled-out dental work, serious toothaches, chips and cracks, and even a piece of food or another object that is stuck in your teeth and won’t come out.If your condition is causing you serious pain and discomfort and you don’t know how to treat it on your own, you are experiencing a dental emergency. Contact us right away to get relief from  your issue.

What to do in a dental emergency

If you have lost a tooth or piece of dental work, you should recover it immediately. Rinse the tooth in warm water and try to gently put the tooth back into its socket. If you are not able to put the tooth back in its socket, put it in a baggie of cold milk and bring it with you to your emergency appointment.

Next, contact The Burkitt Center for Comprehensive Dentistry as soon as possible to let us know that you’re coming in for an appointment. Ideally, you should see a dentist within 1-2 hours of experiencing any dental emergency to have the best chance of restoring your tooth of dental work.

If your mouth is bleeding, you can address this by using cotton balls or gauze to absorb blood. You can also take over-the-counter medicine like Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin (ibuprofen) to mitigate pain and inflammation. Apply an ice pack to the outside of your mouth to help with your swelling and discomfort.

Above all else, prioritize coming to The Burkitt Center for Comprehensive Dentistry as soon as you can, so that you can get the proper oral care to relieve your pain and restore your tooth.
